Crowns Q & A

What is a crown?

A dental crown is a cap that fits over a weak or damaged tooth to protect, strengthen, and improve its appearance. They’re customized to blend in with the rest of your teeth, so they look natural and feel comfortable. Dr. Petrova may recommend a crown for a tooth that:

  • Is in danger of fracturing

  • Underwent a root canal

  • Has a large filling that needs to be replaced

  • Is chipped, cracked, or discolored

  • Is artificial and needs a new replacement

Crowns completely cover the visible surface of a tooth. Depending on your needs, Dr. Petrova may recommend installing crowns to support a bridge. However, for plenty of people, crowns are an effective restoration by themselves.

How is a crown fitted?

You can expect your crown installation to take two appointments with Dr. Petrova. At the first visit, she carefully removes part of your tooth’s surface so it can comfortably fit the crown.

After shaping your tooth in preparation of the crown, Dr. Petrova takes an impression. She sends the impression to a dental lab, which creates your crown from durable materials. While you wait for your permanent crown, you wear a temporary crown to protect your tooth.

During your second visit, Dr. Petrova removes your temporary crown. She then applies the permanent crown to your tooth using strong dental adhesive. Once the crown is safely attached to your tooth, she shapes it to ensure the most comfortable possible fit.

How do I take care of my crowns?

You should treat your crowns the same way you would any other tooth. To ensure your crown stays in good shape, you should brush at least twice a day, floss at least twice a day, and come in for a routine checkup and cleaning with Dr. Petrova once every six months.

To prevent your crown from cracking, be careful to avoid biting or chewing on hand substances, like ice or hard candy. Be sure to schedule an appointment with Dr. Petrova as soon as possible if you notice any discomfort. With proper care, modern crowns are designed to last for at least ten years and often last much longer.
